Bears start quickly, hold off Everett

Yakima Herald-Republic

EVERETT -- The Yakima Bears took early what the Everett AquaSox gave them Sunday afternoon at Everett Memorial Stadium -- then held on not to give it all back late.

Taking advantage of four Everett errors and defusing a ninth-inning rally that had already produced two runs, the Bears won 7-6 in the fourth contest of the five-game set. The series wraps up tonight at 7:05.

Yakima had just four hits in the game compared to the AquaSox's 12. The Bears, though, made the most of Everett's flubs, scoring in three of the four innings in which an error was made, and shined on the base paths with six stolen bases.

The Bears took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on only two hits -- RBI singles by Andrew Fie and Alfredo Martin. The rally was aided by Everett pitcher Fleming Baez, who walked two batters and further damaged his cause with a botched pickoff attempt.

Yakima extended its lead to 5-0 in the second. Jhoan Pimantel's leadoff double was the lone hit in the inning. Pimantel and Greg Bordes, both of whom benefited from Everett shortstop George Soto's throwing error, scored on RBI groundouts by David Cooper and Martel, respectively.

Everett, the Seattle Mariners short-season Class A affiliate, trimmed the lead to 5-4 with a pair of runs in both the third and fifth innings off Yakima starter T.J. Hose, who improved to 2-1 this season.

The Bears capped their scoring in the sixth as Pimentel drew a one-out walk and scored when Everett pitcher Doug Salinas committed a two-base throwing error on Bordes' sacrifice bunt.

Bordes ended up on third and scored on Collin Cowgill's single to left field to give Yakima a 7-4 advantage.

Everett roughed up Yakima reliever Bryan Woodall for two runs on two hits and two walks in the bottom of the ninth before Jason Durst got the final out for his second save of the season.
