Track and field notebook -- Crusaders in running for Class 2B boys state repeat

YAKIMA -- Before adding up the potential points based on district performances, Riverside Christian track coach Scott Wells figured his boys team had a decent shot at repeating as Class 2B state champion Friday and Saturday in Cheney.

But it would be very close.

Then came the projected numbers: Riverside Christian 58, Lind-Ritzville 58, Tacoma Baptist 51.

"You never can tell how things will end up, but it's fun to get an idea," Wells said. "Ritzville is more spread out than we are, a very well-rounded team, actually. I thought they would be about 10 points up on us when I started adding."

The Crusaders won last year's title with 48 points and had only one significant loss to graduation, long jump winner Justin Lovern. The Wells brothers, Dana and Aaron, and a top-seeded 4x100 appear capable of pushing RC toward 50 points this weekend.

A surprising boost came at the district meet from freshman Kyle Gartrell, who added nearly three feet to his triple jump best and is seeded second at state behind Aaron Wells.

Dope-sheet scoring for the girls meet makes Tacoma Baptist the favorite with La Salle and Riverside Christian side-by-side for second.

* Trout Lake-Glenwood's girls, who won last year's 1B title with 94 points, could approach triple digits with 11 individual entries and three relays.

OLANDER AIMS FOR PR: Given her 63-second opening lap in last Saturday's regional 800, West Valley's Lisa Olander is clearly gearing up for a run this week at her two-year-old career best of 2:12.83.

Question is, will anyone push her?

Olander's regional time of 2:14.18 is the No. 1 seed and no one else qualified under 2:17. And the Rams' junior didn't have the benefit of the cooler temperatures on the westside.

Another West Valley 800 runner to watch in Pasco this week is Kyle Mellander, who owns the state's second-fastest time for a sophomore at 1:56.87. He and regional winner Leon Dean of North Central posted the top two qualifying times.

RANGERS FLYING HIGH: Naches Valley sophomore Claire Boutillier enjoyed a day to remember at the SCAC district meet last week, sweeping the long jump and triple jump and helping the Rangers win the 4x100.

Boutillier set a school record of 35-5 on her last attempt in the triple jump and is seeded No. 1 at state in Tacoma. She is seeded second in the long jump.

Another NV triple-jumper, freshman Kelly Snyder, is seeded fifth. Boutillier, Snyder, Tonya Smith and Stephanie McKenna comprise the 4x100 and led the Rangers to the SCAC West dual title.

SANCHEY'S FOURPEAT: For the third straight year, Klickitat's Herschel Sanchey has loaded up his state schedule with three events, the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.

And while he'll have his hands full in the 800 and 1,600 with defending champion Matt Conrath, who edged the Vandals' ace in both 1B state races last year, Sanchey will end his career, fittingly, with the 3,200 on Saturday afternoon.

Not only will the race produce his 11th state medal, but it will complete an unprecedented four-year sweep of the eight-lap race.
