Gunfire erupts outside Toppenish home -- again

Yakima Herald-Republic

The same Toppenish house hit by gang-related gunshots for the past week reportedly took more fire on Saturday night, city police said.

The unidentified victim told officers somebody walked onto the property in the 600 block of East First Avenue, announced his gang membership, fired a single round and fled, according to a news release issued Sunday by police.

That's the same place where a former Yakima family has reported their house being hit by more than a half-dozen bullets, plus being firebombed once.

All of the incidents have taken place since May 10, when the family moved from Yakima to avoid gang problems. The renter acknowledged that her son knew gang members but said he had distanced himself in the past year.

The mother told the Herald-Republic she was moving out over the weekend. Police say they are doing as much as possible to address the house being targeted, probably by rival gang members.

Police request any tips be reported to 865-4355.
