Prep soccer -- Grizzlies win regional title

Yakima Herald-Republic

SUNNYSIDE -- It's been home sweet home for Sunnyside's boys soccer team.

Playing on their home field for the third straight regional game, the Grizzlies once again rode their powerful defense to a 2-0 victory over Eastmont in the championship match Saturday afternoon.

And that will keep Sunnyside at home for one -- and possibly two -- rounds of the Class 3A state tournament. The Grizzlies will take a nine-match win streak and 15-3 record into Tuesday's state opener against Kamiakin and a victory would ensure a home match in the quarterfinals.

The freshman duo of Armando Ortiz (goal) and Humberto Bermudez (assist) hooked up for a first-half tally, and Ortiz punched in another goal early in the second half.

Goalkeeper Joaquin Perez followed a 1-0 semifinal win over Kamiakin with another shutout, stopping six shots.

In Saturday's third-place match, Kamiakin blanked Hanford 2-0. Sunnyside has won two of three against Kamiakin this season.

First half: 1, Sunnyside, Armando Ortiz (Humberto Bermudez), 37:00.

Second half: 2, Sunnyside, Ortiz (Jesus Solis), 47:00.

Saves: Joaquin Perez (S) 6; Jose Gladin (E) 9.
