Selah brush fire threatens apartment complex

Dirt is shoveled on a brushfire as people fight the blaze on a hillside above South Fifth Street in Selah on Wednesday afternoon. The fire burned about 2 acres of the scrub-covered hillside before it was brought under control by firefighters from Selah, Gleed, Yakima, East Valley, and the Yakima Training Center, according to Selah Fire Department battalion chief Jim Martin. The fire was caused by a child playing with as lighter near the Park Village Apartments. That youngster has been contacted by the police, said Martin. No one was hurt and no structures were damaged in the blaze.
