YAKIMA -- If openers are a predictor of how a team's season will go, expect the La Salle Lightning to be in the state playoff mix this year.

With junior quarterback Mike McGree completing of 9 of 13 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns -- both to Jake DeGooyer -- the Lightning upended defending Class 2B state champion DeSales 32-22 in a non-league matchup Friday night at Marquette Stadium.

The Lightning last knocked off the Irish in 2006, when it eventually advanced to the state championship game.

"I don't think anybody outside of our kids and our program gave us a chance to win," Lightning coach Jack McMillan said.

McGree's first scoring strike to DeGooyer went 70 yards and the second, a 20-yard hookup, sealed the with just less than three minutes left in the game.

On the ensuing possession, DeSales turned it over on downs.

Tony Cacchiotti rushed for 115 yards on 19 carries for the Lightning, which did not commit a penalty in the game.

"I believe we wore them down in the second half," McMillan said.
