ELLENSBURG -- Central Washington's women's soccer program has shown signs of improvement in recent years.

But not in terms of wins and losses against UC San Diego.

Though the Wildcats held an advantage in shots on goal Thursday, they failed to convert and also yielded a pair of second-half goals in a 2-0 season-opening loss at the CWU soccer field.

Central outshot the Tritons 8-6 in the first half and 16-11 for the match, but San Diego nonetheless improved to 4-0-0 in the series and has outscored the Wildcats 21-0.

The Tritons' first goal came in the 69th minute, with Tanaya Pattnaik scoring on a left-side cross. Four minutes later Natasha Belak-Berger converted an assist from Sara Spaventra to cap the scoring.

First half: No scoring.

Second half: 1, UC San Diego, Tanaya Pattnaik, 68:57; 2, UC San Diego, Natasha Belak-Berger (Sara Spaventa), 71:27.

Saves: Jessica McGovern (USD) 4, Amber Easterbrook (CWU) 3.
