Daniel Foster is only 11, but the young tennis player has legitimately be called a national champion. Alexis Filliol has only just turned 17, but she's already a battle-tested veteran of national tournament competitions.

Those two were among four players from the Yakima Tennis Club's junior program, along with Jeff Carlson and Aaron Farmer, to represent the Pacific Northwest last month in their respective age groups in this year's USTA Zone Team Championships.

Foster, representing the Pacific Northwest 12-and-under zone team at nationals in Tucson, Ariz., won seven of his 10 matches (half singles, half doubles) to help the Pacific Northwest team capture the title -- the first national crown for the Northwest 12s in USTA zone tournaments, which are often dominated by teams from Southern California and the Southeast.

Filliol won two of her four singles matches and went 1-3 in doubles for the Pacific Northwest 18-and-under team, which lost three of its four matches last week in Novato, Calif. The tournament marked the fourth year that Filliol has represented the region at the national zone championships.

Carlson played in the 16-and-under zone finals in Waco, Texas, while Farmer played in the 14-and-under event in Mobile, Ala.

JUNIOR GOLF

Cook in championship flight
at Junior PNGA

Christine Cook of Eisenhower moved into the championship flight for today's first round of match play in the Junior Girls Pacific Northwest Golf Association Championship at the Longview Country Club.

Cook fired an 86 in Monday's stroke play on the par-71, 5,800-yard Longview course, tying for 11th place. The stroke-play results seed players into the match play flights, and the top 16 move into the championship flight. Cook will need to win her 18-hole match today against Mallory Kent of Tukwila, though to stay in the championship flight; a loss would drop her into the first flight.

Liz Tikriti of West Valley shot a 94 Monday and was in 30th place in the 42-player field. She will face Isabel Chien of Bellevue today in match play.
