Tonight's "Dateline" program will feature the case of Frederick Russell, the Washington State University student convicted of driving drunk when he crashed into a car full of fellow students outside of Pullman, Wash.
Brandon Clements of Wapato was killed in the June 2001 wreck.
The segment is scheduled to air during tonight's show, which starts at 9 p.m.
Show notes from "Dateline" promise the first-ever interview with Russell. He fled to Ireland, spent years on the run and then fought extradition.
He was sentenced last year to 14 years for vehicular homicide and assault.
Clements' mother, Karen Overacker of Wapato, was interviewed for the story.
She said she wasn't briefed ahead of time on the content prepared by producers, but she thinks it's important for her son's death to be remembered.
Local TV channel 23 is the NBC affiliate.
