A stretch of U.S. Highway 97 between Toppenish and Wapato will be closed for four days beginning Monday while crews make safety improvements at railroad crossings.

Traffic will be detoured onto Progressive and Olden Way roads, west of Toppenish.

All oversize loads are prohibited on the detour due to sharp turns associated with the route.

State Department of Transportation officials are recommending northbound drivers use State Route 22 through Toppenish to

Interstate 82 as an alternative route.

Southbound drivers are being encouraged to take I-82 exit 50 to State Route 22 through Toppenish to eventually connect with Highway 97.
