RICHLAND -- Taking a big step toward their third straight Central Washington League title, the Twin City Titans swept the hot Yakima Pepsi Beetles 5-4, 11-8 at Richland High School on Wednesday.

The Titans, who scored three runs in the first inning of both games, improved to 17-3 in league with a four-game series remaining with rival Kennewick.

The fourth-place Beetles (7-9, 30-22) will close their league campaign with two series over four days -- Wenatchee on Friday and Saturday and Yakima Valley on Sunday and Monday.

After spotting Twin City an early 4-0 lead, Yakima rallied with two runs in the sixth and seventh to pull within 5-4 in the opener. Tyler Doornink threw a complete game with six strikeouts, and Junior Chavez doubled and scored two runs.

In the nightcap, the Titans flew out to an 8-3 lead after two innings but Yakima tied it with a five-run third, which included home runs by Gibby Briones and Chavez. Twin City shut it down from there, however, as reliever Britt Hamer threw four shutout innings to close the game.
