Patrol looks for too much revelry

YAKIMA -- State troopers will spend the Independence Day weekend looking for intoxicated drivers across Central Washington.

They're warning motorists to enjoy the holiday without driving drunk.

Chief John Batiste and other top commanders of the Washington State Patrol are scheduled to join troopers on the road to highlight the importance of the issue.

"We know this time of year many people get together to celebrate Independence Day.

"Unfortunately, people under the influence of drugs and alcohol will head out onto our highways," Batiste said in a news release. "Our troopers are dedicated to reducing the number of collisions and fatality collisions caused by drivers impaired by drugs or alcohol."

Six extra troopers on overtime are scheduled to augment regular patrols in the agency's Yakima district from Thursday through Sunday.

Extra troopers are also scheduled to work in districts covering Klickitat and Kittitas counties.

The patrol recommends that anyone who sees a suspected drunk driver call 9-1-1 with the description and location of the vehicle and the driver's actions.

Customer service sessions in Prosser

PROSSER -- Yakima Valley Community College's vineyard and winery technology program is partnering with the Prosser Economic Development Association to offer two workshops on July 10.

The first of the two workshops on that day will address customer service innovation. That session, which will run from 8:30 a.m. until noon, will feature Elizabeth Slater delivering an interactive presentation that points to the positive results of integrating high quality customer service into every aspect of the workplace.

The workshop will be held at the Benton Public Utility District conference room, 25 Gap Road, Prosser.

The second workshop of the day will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the same location. The session will address tasting room management.

Both workshops cost $25 per person.

Golf event to benefit Alzheimer's effort

YAKIMA -- The second annual Highgate Senior Living "Let's Beat Alzheimer's" Charity Golf Tournament will be Friday, Aug. 1 at Apple Tree Golf Course.

The one-of-a-kind event is designed to raise awareness of the growing incidence of Alzheimer's, which has more than doubled since 1980. By 2050, the disease will afflict an estimated 16 million Americans. One in 8 baby boomers may develop Alzheimer's.

The golf tournament gets under way with a putting contest at 11 a.m., followed by registration at noon with the game at 1:30 p.m.

Fees are $125 per golfer, which includes greens fees, cart, dinner and dance and a raffle. Registration is limited to the first 120 entries.
