Unleashed, the Yakima Herald-Republic's weekly teen section, won first place in the country for youth content at the Young Reader Seminar in Phoenix.
It also captured third place for program excellence and third place for special projects for "Pets and their People." The teen section awards were judged recently against other newspapers with a circulation up to 60,000.
Students also competed against their peers from newspapers of all circulation sizes. Four-year Unleashed veteran Olivia Hernandez won first place in the news story category for her story about Davis High School refusing to run the play, "The Laramie Project." Jordie Ricigliano won first place for her review of Sasquatch, "One Under the Sun." And Becky Paulson won first place for her photo, "A Loved One in Iraq."
Joy Myers won second place for her feature story on beefalo, and Lucia Borrello-
Seltzer won second place for her first-person feature "Before and After" about revisiting her old home in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
Unleashed is coordinated by news reporter Adriana Janovich, who's beginning her sixth year in this position. The section itself was formed 10 years ago. The 2008-2009 team is made up of 31 students -- 18 returning and 13 new -- from 10 Yakima Valley high schools.
