SUNNYSIDE -- The family of Laynee Schneider, a 9-year-old who needs a kidney transplant, is asking volunteers to be tested for a possible donor match and contributions to help pay for her surgery.
Schneider has terminal renal disease due to a birth defect. Her kidneys function at about 5 percent of healthy capacity. She lives hooked up to a feeding tube 14 hours a day and a dialysis machine 10 hours every night, said her mother, Emily Golladay.
Her father is Ron Schneider.
Donors must have type A or O blood and be between 18 and 50 years old. Most of the initial screening can be done in the Yakima Valley, though the University of Washington Medical Center would perform the donor surgery.
For more information about being a donor, call the University of Washington Living Donor Program at 206-598-3627 or visit www.livingorgandonor.org.The organization helps people donate organs to other transplant patients, even if they don't match Laynee.
Family members also have set up an account with the Children's Organ Transplant Association, a nonprofit group that assists young transplant patients in raising money for surgery.
Laynee's surgery will cost up to $1.5 million, far above her insurance limit, Golladay said.
For more information about fundraising, visit the transplant association's Web site at www.cota.org or call 800-366-2682.
