Terrace Heights principal receives Crystal Apple Award
An elementary school principal was awarded the East Valley School District's Crystal Apple Award at a surprise assembly at his school Thursday.
Bob Adamson, principal at Terrace Heights Elementary School, learned of his award to the chant of "Mr. A" from nearly 400 students as he walked into the assembly.
Adamson is being recognized for being selfless and generous as he builds relationships with his students and their families, his nominators said.
The recognition comes with a $1,000 cash award that will be presented at East Valley's graduation ceremony June 8 in the Yakima Valley SunDome.
Adamson was among five educators nominated for the honor. All nominees were awarded a $100 dinner certificate to Birchfield Manor.
The awards were made possible because of donations from East Valley businesses and individuals.
Pancake breakfast will raise funds for Chernobyl children
YAKIMA -- Yakima Children from Chernobyl will host its first pancake breakfast fundraiser Sunday.
The event will run from 7 to 10 a.m. at the United Christian Church, 317 S. 41st St. Pancakes, sausage, eggs, coffee, water and juice will be served. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger. Desserts will be available for an additional fee, and music will be provided by Mamas Pride.
Funds generated will help cover the costs associated with providing assistance to children from the contaminated areas of Belarus from the Chernobyl explosion. The organization provides airfare, ground transportation, travel documents and medical, vision and dental care. The average cost for these services is $2,000 per child.

Council of the Blind hosting class on public transportation
YAKIMA -- The Yakima Valley Council of the Blind is hosting a class on how to use public transportation.
The class, which is limited to 10 participants, is at 8:15 a.m. May 21 at Yakima's Harman Center.
After a short introduction covering bus transfers and routes, participants will catch and ride a city bus to Union Gap, transfer, then ride to Legends Casino in Toppenish, where they'll have lunch.
The group is expected to return to the Harman Center -- via the bus -- around 4:30 p.m. For more information, call
