Prep Roundup -- Mercado's goals lift Selah

YAKIMA -- Senior Israel Mercado scored early and late -- both times with the help of Michael Fadden -- and lifted Selah to a 2-1 overtime victory over East Valley in a loser-out CWAC district boys soccer match on Thursday.

Mercado scored on an assist from Fadden in the 18th minute and the same tandem produced the winning goal two minutes into the first overtime.

The Vikings will travel to Othello, a 4-0 winner over Wapato, on Saturday to battle for the district's third and final state berth. The match starts at 1 p.m.

 

First half: 1, Selah, Israel Mercado (Michael Fadden), 18:00.

Second half: 2, East Valley, Mark Gutierrez (Michael Rogstad), 52:00.

Overtime: 3, Selah, Mercado (Fadden), 1:40.

At Wapato, Ivan Lopez scored one goal and assisted on another as the Wolves' season ended with an 11-7 record.

HIGHLAND 2, ROYAL 1:
At Highland, the Scotties ousted Royal and remained alive for a state berth. Match details were unavailable.

Highland will host Wahluke, which fell 1-0 to Connell in Thursday's championship match, on Saturday at 11 a.m. for the second and final state berth.

 

CONNELL 1, WAHLUKE 0: At Connell, Raul Farias' unassisted goal in the 24th minute stood up the Eagles in the winner-to-state district championship match.

As a result of the loss, Wahluke will play Highland for the fourth time this season in a showdown for the final Class 1A state berth. The Warriors have won the three previous meetings with the Scotties, 4-1, 4-1 and 3-1.

GOLF

WV girls finish unbeaten

Capping an undefeated run of five straight league wins, West Valley's girls wrapped up the Columbia Basin League title Thursday at Apple Tree Golf Course.

Liz Tikriti's medalist round of 87 led the Rams to a score of 382,
46 strokes ahead of runner-up Eastmont. West Valley accumulated 34.5 team points through the five meets with Eastmont second with 29.

The Rams will send eight girls to the 36-hole regional tournament Monday at Kennewick's Canyon Lakes Golf Course.

* In the boys regional tournament at Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland, West Valley's Eric Gravbrot placed third and earned a trip to state along with teammate Teddy Jones and Sunnyside's Justin Bos.

Mustangs split with Ephrata

EPHRATA -- Rachel Jackson was 2-for-4 with three RBI, including an inside-the-park home run, to help Prosser beat Ephrata 8-6 in the second game of the CWAC doubleheader on Thursday.

Ashley Crabtree had three hits for the Mustangs, who lost the opener 13-3. Both teams moved to 5-11 in conference play.
