YAKIMA -- Some 800 kids between the ages of 5 and 14 will be hitting the shores of the Greenway's Sarg Hubbard Pond in waves this Saturday for the eighth annual Fishing Kids event.
Kids who have already registered -- and the deadline has passed -- will get a rod and reel, instruction on how to use it, a Fishing Kids T-shirt and a half-hour of fishing, during which they can keep the first two trout they reel in, and all for their $5 sign-up fee.
Although preregistration has closed, there are still a few openings left for the last three 30-minute time sessions (beginning at 11:15 a.m., noon and 12:45 p.m.). There's no guarantee (and no T-shirts left), but kids hoping to grab those spots can show up a half-hour before the session and might still be able to get the rod-and-feel setup and the fishing.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), which has already stocked the juveniles-only- fishing pond with 850 rainbow trout over the past three months, including 100 jumbos, will be putting in 2,000 from the state's Naches Hatchery prior to the Saturday event, plus nearly 90 large, 5-pounds-plus broodstock rainbows from the Goldendale Hatchery. The Cast For Kids Foundation, one of the co-sponsors, has also arranged for an additional 3,200 trout from Trout Lodge, a private vendor.
The pond will be closed to fishing on Friday.
The Greenway figures to be fairly crowded on Saturday, since the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is also holding a walk that day to raise awareness on the disease. Greenway staffers will be directing motorists to the proper parking areas. Participants in either event should consider arriving a few minutes earlier than planned.
