YAKIMA, Wash. — High winds caused a power pole to lean and cut out electricity to about 100 customers in downtown Yakima around 2:30 p.m. today.

Workers with Pacific Power shut down service in about a three-block area after Yakima Fire Department officials said wind pushed the pole dangerously close to falling into the back side of Ron’s Coin & Book on North Third Street.

Police were directing traffic along A Street from North Third Street west to at least North First Street where power was also knocked out as the power company set to work.

Sidney Cole, a Pacific Power representative at the scene, said the dangling power lines would be moved once a temporary power pole could be put in place.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for the Yakima Valley and much of the Pacific Northwest as an intense low pressure system moves into the area. The high wind warning is expected to last until 10 p.m. Wednesday.
