YAKIMA, Wash. -- The search for a new police chief is down to two finalists.
City spokesman Randy Beehler said Tuesday that Dave Frazer, who most recently served as police chief in McFarland, Calif., has been bumped from the list.
Remaining are Dale Miller, the police chief in Ellensburg, and Dominic Rizzi Jr., a lieutenant in the Chicago Police Department.
Interim City Manager Michael Morales, who is conducting the search, visited Chicago last week as he continues to gather background information on the candidates. A similar visit to Ellensburg is expected this week, Beehler said.
Beehler said Morales did not visit California before eliminating Frazer, deciding that either Rizzi or Miller would be a better fit for Yakima and the police department.
Yakima has been without a permanent police chief since January 2011, when Sam Granato left the position after a rocky seven-year tenure. He was the first outside chief in modern history.
Morales has said he hopes to have a decision within the next couple of weeks.
