YAKIMA, Wash. — A man shot during a domestic dispute this morning is expected to survive following surgery, police said this afternoon.

The man, in his late 20s, was shot once in the abdomen as he argued in front of a residence at 1116 S. 40th Ave. over removing a child from the home.

The shooting occurred about 9:15 a.m.

Police Capt. Rod Light said the mother of the child and her boyfriend, who is the father of the child, got into an argument at the house, where they were residing with his mother.

Later, an aunt of the girlfriend arrived in a red van to pick up the woman and the baby and a verbal confrontation began between the victim and the aunt in the front yard of the house.

Light said the aunt, thought to be in her early 30s, fired the weapon. She is in custody and was the only one arrested, he said. Prosecutors will decide whether she should face charges.

Light said initial information gathered by police suggests that the altercation between the parties was only verbal. The man was probably about 6 feet from the woman when he was shot, he said.

The weapon was recovered at the scene.

None of those involved was identified. However, Garrett Call, who identified himself as the brother of the suspect and the father of the girlfriend, said the couple had had problems in the past.

Light confirmed police have been called to the residence in the past because of domestic disputes.

State Child Protective Services took the child.
