YAKIMA, Wash. -- A Yakima man in his 50s avoided serious injury after awaking to discover his home was on fire Sunday morning.

The man and his mother were able to leave the home without further injury, firefighters said.

The man was expected to be released after treatment for smoke inhalation at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, said Battalion Chief Abel Castilleja of the Yakima Fire Department.

Firefighters were called shortly before 10:40 a.m. to the home in the 2000 block of West Nob Hill Boulevard.

They quickly knocked down the flames, containing most of the fire damage to a single room in the attached garage where the man lives.

The man's mother, who declined to give her name, lives in the house. She said she heard her son saying that the house was on fire, but did not know more about what happened.

The house was not damaged, but it was expected to be at least temporarily unavailable due to wiring issues discovered by firefighters.

The fire apparently started in the man's living area because of a problem with an electrical plug or power strip, investigators said.

Damage was estimated at $15,000.

Neighbors said they would help the pair, and the American Red Cross was asked to provide lodging assistance.

Westbound Nob Hill Boulevard was partly blocked by emergency vehicles for more than an hour. Firefighters left the scene by 12:40 p.m.
