YAKIMA, Wash. -- A suicidal man threatening to jump off a freeway overpass onto Interstate 82 was subdued without serious injury this morning, Yakima police said.
The disturbance began at 7:18 a.m. when multiple callers alerted 911 dispatchers that a man on the Yakima Avenue overpass was sitting with one leg over the railing, Sgt. Jay Seely said.
A 50-minute standoff ensued as Yakima police and a Washington State Patrol trooper tried to talk the 30-year-old man into climbing down from the railing.
Seely said the man finally climbed down, then was subdued by officers when he tried to climb back up.
He was taken into protective custody and transported to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital for a mental health evaluation.
Seely said the westbound lanes of the freeway were closed down for about 50 minutes while the negotiation was under way.
