James W. "Wood" Epting
Shaw & Sons Funeral Directors
YAKIMA - Mr. James W. "Wood" Epting, 94, of Yakima, Washington departed his earthly home and passed into the arms of his Heavenly Father early in the morning on Friday February 3, 2012 in the presence of his beloved son Ronnie Epting.
Mr. Epting was born September 20, 1917, to parents Houston and Dosha Epting in Mount Olive, Mississippi where he resided until he entered the Army in 1943, where he served in the 3rd Army under General George S. Patton. He was very proud to be a World War II veteran. He met and married his future wife, Estelle in Winnsboro, Louisiana in 1946 and soon thereafter they moved to Yakima where they remained until 1958 when they moved to San Jose, California. During that time and throughout the rest of his life Mr. Epting worked as an auto mechanic. He is fondly remembered for fixing any auto problem, often for his special friends, and others. Mr. and Mrs. Epting and their young son Ronnie moved back to Yakima in 1972. He was a charter member of the Fairview Avenue Seventh-day Adventist Church where he remained a faithful member until his death. He was strong in his faith in Jesus Christ.
"Wood" loved to fish, shoot pool, and visit with his longtime friends and family members throughout Yakima and in California. In his younger days, Wood liked to play baseball; in later years he loved to watch it. He maintained a very close and loving relationship with his son Ronnie and especially enjoyed visiting and spending time with his three grandchildren and his new great-grandson. He was a very generous and giving parent and friend, at one time sharing his home with several foster children in the Yakima Valley.
He is survived by his son Ronnie Epting of Yakima, three grandchildren, Karen, Alyssa and Rolando of Yakima, one great-grandson Anjelo Garcia of Yakima, one sister-in-law, Laura "Dollbaby" Higgins of Yakima, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and longtime close friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Estelle Epting and his parents Houston and Dosha Epting.
Mr. Epting's love of the Lord and his happy and giving spirit are his legacy. We will miss him, but he lives on in our hearts. We are happy that he has now been delivered into the arms of his savior Jesus Christ.
Visitation will be at Shaw & Sons Funeral Directors, 201 N. 2nd St., Yakima, WA from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, February 11, 2012. Services will be held Monday, February 13, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Shaw & Sons Funeral Directors concluding at West Hills Memorial Park.
