Search on for new Yakima city manager — again

YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima is again advertising for a new city manager.

The consultant handling the recruitment has formally started looking for applicants, according to a city news release issued Friday morning.

It’s the second time in less than a year that the city has sought a new manager.

Dick Zais retired last summer. Don Cooper, picked to replace him, resigned in December after just four months, citing a need to attend to a relative’s medical treatment in Florida.

Former assistant city manager Michael Morales is serving as interim manager. He said recently that he’s interested in being considered for the job.

The council opted to reopen the search under a provision in consultant Colin Baenziger’s contract that said he would conduct a free search if the chosen candidate left the city within a year.

Applications will be accepted through early March, the city said in the news release. Finalist interviews are set for April 19 and 20.

The next permanent manager may be in place by late spring or early summer.
