Appetite | Liquid smoke lends flavor to Crockpot beans

This recipe is for you, Donna Scofield. As you'll see in Sunday's Life in the Northwest section, Donna's column — the Family Chuckle — laments how often she loses things, including a big box of recipes. One of the recipes she lost used bacon, hamburger and four different kinds of beans and liquid smoke.

I think she might mean this one. Really, it sounds pretty tasty. There's lots of variations on the Internet and you could probably vary your beans to your liking.

Crockpot Beans

1 lb. ground beef
3/4 lb. bacon, cut in sm. pieces
1 c. chopped onion
2 (1 lb. 15 oz.) cans pork & beans
1 (1 lb.) can kidney beans, drained
1 (1 lb.) can butter Limas, drained
1 c. ketchup
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 tbsp. liquid smoke
3 tbsp. white vinegar
1 tsp. salt
Dash of pepper

Brown ground beef, drain. Put in crockpot. Brown bacon and onions, drain. Add bacon, onions and remaining ingredients to crockpot. Stir well. Cover and cook on low 4 to 9 hours.
