Vibraphonist Charlie Shoemake played with the George Shearing Quintet for seven years, so the man knows a little something about Shearing.
Now Shoemake, who played with the legendary Shearing in the late 1960s and early '70s, is honoring his former bandleader with "The Sounds of Shearing," which he'll play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at The Seasons Performance Hall.
That connection to Shearing is about all the bona fides a jazzman needs, but it's not the limit of Shoemake's resume. He is an accomplished teacher and has recorded as a bandleader himself. Plus, and this goes a long way around here, award-winning jazz writer Doug Ramsey of Yakima vouches for him, saying Shoemake is "known among vibists for his creativity and dazzling speed."
And here he is in li'l ol' Yakima. You can catch him for $15. For tickets or more information, visit www.theseasonsyakima.com or call 509-453-1888.
