Drugs, guns and tactical gear seized in Yakima

YAKIMA, Wash. — Police recovered several guns and drugs while serving a search warrant Tuesday afternoon at a home in the 1100 block of South Naches Avenue.

Officers also arrested the father of the main suspect, an 18-year-old with ties to gangs, said Lt. Mike Merryman of the Yakima Police Department.

Police have asked prosecutors to charge the father, a convicted felon, with three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver it, according to Yakima County's jail logs.

With the help of the SWAT team, gang unit officers showed up at the house looking for an 18-year-old man who they believed illegally had an AK-47 assault rifle, Merryman said.

He wasn't home but his father was.

Officers found the AK-47, an SKS .223-caliber assault rifle, a .22 caliber rifle, a 30-30 rifle and a .22 caliber pistol, Merryman said, as well as eight grams of cocaine, 18 marijuana plants, 3/4 pound of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Officers also found a tactical vest and soft body armor belonging to the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, which was reported stolen from a vehicle prowl, Merryman said.

Police are pursuing an arrest warrant for the younger man, Merryman said.
