YAKIMA, Wash. -- Marcie Earp admits she doesn't always read the entire newspaper.

But in late January, the widowed Mabton woman spotted a days-old news story in the Yakima Herald-Republic about Florentino Martinez, a carrier for the newspaper whose van was destroyed by a fire during mid-January's heavy snow.

Moved by the disabled carrier's plight, Earp decided to give him a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban, and transferred the title Monday afternoon, paying $270 in taxes. She also threw in a new battery. The licensing representative estimated the value at $2,500 to $4,000.

"A lot of times I'm too busy and I don't get to read the paper," Earp said.

The vehicle was used by Earp's late husband, Doug, who died in 2010. Marcie Earp still runs First Love Ranch, a temporary Christian shelter for needy adults in Mabton.

Martinez, who lost his leg to diabetes above the knee in June, and his wife, Sandra, each have a rural route for the Herald-Republic.

Since the fire, they have been borrowing cars from family members while trying to save for a new one. They were shocked by Earp's donation.

"She's got a beautiful heart," Sandra Martinez said.
