Central Washington University is adding a program to further bolster the state’s wine industry, which has greatly expanded in recent years to become a significant part of the state's economy. This spring, CWU will launch its Sommelier Certificate Program, the first sommelier training course in the Evergreen state.
The 10-week program is designed to teach students about selection, service and sales of wine. It is a professional development course for people already working in or looking for a career in the beverage industry, particularly in dining or similar establishments. Students will learn to analyze the taste of not only wine, but also beer, spirits, liqueurs, coffee and tea.
"We've had multiple requests from both industry and students to add a sommelier component. We feel that this curriculum will enhance the current World Wine Program offerings," Amy Mumma, who runs CWU's World Wine Program, said in a news release.
Mumma will oversee the sommelier program.
The program will consist of three, four-credit courses, offered spring quarter on Central's Ellensburg campus. Applications are available from the World Wine Program’s website. Applications can also be requested by calling 509-963-1754 or e-mailing wine@cwu.edu. Applicants must be 21 or older before beginning the program.
Last year, CWU added a program in brewing beer.
