HARRAH -- An investigation continued Friday into the fatal shooting of a 36-year-old Lower Valley man on Thursday in a rural farming area about two miles east of Harrah.
Authorities identified the man as Audelino Mendez. However, they are withholding his address, saying only that he lived in the Lower Valley. His death marked Yakima County's first homicide of the year.
Deputies said Mendez suffered a single shot to the abdomen outside a home in the 6200 block of Lateral B Road. He was able to leave, but minutes later drove his vehicle into a ditch about 21/2 miles away in the 6300 block of Lateral A Road.
Deputies learned of the shooting about 3:45 p.m. Mendez was taken by ambulance to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, where he died while undergoing surgery about 6 p.m.
Authorities did not release his name until Friday, after relatives were notified.
Detectives have not described the circumstances of the shooting nor released information about possible suspects.
Anyone with information about the death is asked to call the sheriff's office at 509-574-2500 or Crime Stoppers of Yakima County at 800-222-TIPS.
