YAKIMA, Wash. — Authorities have released the name of a 36-year-old man who died Thursday night after being shot at a home in the 6200 block of Lateral B Road outside Wapato.
The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Audelino Mendez. They declined to release his address, except to say he lived in the Lower Yakima Valley.
"The identity of the suspect or suspects, and the motive, is still under investigation," according to a news release issued by the sheriff’s office.
Authorities said that after Mendez was shot in the abdomen, he left the home and minutes later drove his vehicle into a ditch in the 6300 block of Lateral A Road. The incident was reported about 3:45 p.m.
He was taken by ambulance to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, where he died during surgery about 6 p.m.
His name was not released until authorities had a chance to notify relatives.
Detectives have not described the circumstances of the shooting or released information about possible suspects. The investigation is ongoing, authorities said.
