WAPATO, Wash. -- A 36-year-old Lower Valley man died during surgery Thursday evening after being shot at his home in the 6200 block of Lateral B Road outside Wapato, authorities said.
The man left the home and minutes later drove his vehicle into a ditch in the 6300 block of Lateral A Road, according to a news release from the Yakima County Sheriff's Office.
He was then taken by ambulance to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital for treatment of a single shot to the abdomen.
The incident was reported about 3:45 p.m.; the man died about 6 p.m.
His name was not released pending notification of relatives.
Detectives did not describe the circumstances of the shooting or release information about possible suspects. The investigation is ongoing, authorities said.
