Valley schools earn state Achievement Awards

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Several Yakima Valley schools received Washington Achievement Awards from the state Superintendent of Public Instruction on Wednesday. In all, 275 Washington schools received awards for their performance from 2009-11.

The annual awards are based on the Washington Achievement Index, which is compiled by the State Board of Education.

The index tracks how many students at a school meet the state standards for reading, writing, math and science, and graduation rates.

Toppenish High School was among the most highly recognized schools, being recognized as "exemplary" based on the state board's classification system.

The Yakima School District's three high schools all received special recognition. Eisenhower and Davis received awards for improving their graduation rates, while Stanton, the district's alternative high school, was recognized for general improvement.

Three Sunnyside elementary schools -- Outlook, Pioneer and Washington -- received awards for overall excellence. Special recognition also went to Pioneer for improvement and to Washington for math.

* Toppenish High School: Overall Excellence; Special Recognition -- Language Arts; Special Recognition -- Extended Graduation Rate; Special Recognition -- Improvement

* Davis High School, Yakima: Special Recognition -- Extended Graduation Rate

* Eisenhower High School, Yakima: Special Recognition -- Extended Graduation Rate

* Stanton Alternative, Yakima: Special Recognition -- Improvement

* Zillah High School: Special Recognition -- Extended Graduation Rate; Special Recognition -- Closing Achievement Gaps.
