SUNNYSIDE, Wash. -- A half-dozen downtown businesses and property owners have sued the owners of a neighboring restaurant for a fire last year that destroyed two buildings and caused smoke and water damage to others.

In a Yakima County Superior Court lawsuit filed Thursday, the six owners, or their insurance companies, accused Rigoberto and Enedina Carrasco, owners of the Safari Restaurant, of negligence that led to the mid-May fire.

Fire investigators concluded the Edison Avenue blaze was caused by water leaking through the Safari's roof onto an electrical control panel. The flames destroyed the Safari and the neighboring El Conquistador restaurant and led to smoke and water damage to the nearby Blue Moon Bar and Grill, a beauty salon, a nail salon and other storefronts.

The lawsuit contends the Carrascos negligently left the roof in poor condition and stored tires and debris next to a gas line, making the fire harder to contain and extinguish.

The suit did not specify an amount of money for the damages.

The Carrascos were not available for comment.

The Safari and El Conquistador have been demolished. El Conquistador has reopened in the Sunnyside Mini Mall on Sixth Street and Railroad Avenue.
