BOARDMAN, ORE. -- A Colorado biofuel company received a federal loan guarantee to finance a commercial refinery in Boardman.

ZeaChem Inc., which turns agricultural waste and poplar trees into fuel and chemicals, received a promise of a $232.5 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to construct a facility that can produce up to 25 million gallons per year, breaking down the cellulosic fibers in wheat stubble, poplar trees and other organic matter.

The plant will employ 65 long-term operations employees and require about 188 construction workers, according to a company news release Thursday.

In December, ZeaChem completed work at a demonstration refinery.
