YAKIMA, Wash. -- It looks like downtown Yakima will get another sandwich shop.
Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches is looking to open at the ground floor of the Larson Building at Second Street and Yakima Avenue, according to a building permit report from the City of Yakima.
The Champaign, Ill.-based company has more than 1,200 locations nationwide. The Yakima location would be the fifth east of the Cascades — Jimmy John’s has two locations in Spokane, one in Spokane Valley and one in Pullman.
Building owner Larry Hull hinted during a city council meeting last month of a national-brand tenant that would be making major improvements to the space.
The space has been empty since the closing of Taj Express, an Indian restaurant, more than a year ago. Owners Jessie and Paul Randhawa said at the time they wanted to focus on their original location at 2710 W. Nob Hill Blvd., which has been open for nearly four years.
I’ll report back with more details as I get them. In any case, it will be interesting to see how Jimmy John’s does given that downtown is home to several shops including Subway, Sub Shop and The Market Place Deli.
