Members of the House of Representatives are seeking to pass a bill that would create a National Rifle Association special license plate.

The bill, which has both Democratic and Republican support, would allow the state to issue license plates with the NRA logo on them.

Rep. Dean Takko, who is the prime sponsor of House Bill 2202, said the money made from the NRA license plates would go to the hunter safety program.

"As a hunter out in the woods, I want people to be safe," said Takko, who has been an NRA member for more than 20 years.

The bill, filed in December, got its first reading today in the House Transportation Committee. Takko said he isn't sure whether the bill would make it to the floor. He said anything associated with the NRA can be controversial in the Legislature, so he doesn't know how much success he and other sponsors will have.

"I can guarantee far more people will want these plates than some of the others on the list," Takko said.

The Department of Licensing currently offers 47 different special license plates.
