YAKIMA, Wash. -- The nation's leading accreditor of hospitals named Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center a "top performer" on key measures of quality.
The announcement Wednesday by The Joint Commission is part of its annual "quality check" measurement of how well hospitals perform in treating certain acute conditions. The nonprofit commission accredits and certifies some 19,000 health-care organizations and programs in the United States.
Regional was a top performer on treatment for heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia, which means the patients it treated for these conditions had optimal outcomes.
Toppenish Community Hospital, which like Regional is owned by Health Management Association of Naples, Fla., was also named a top performer in the area of pneumonia.
Top performer designations recognize hospitals that "attain and sustain excellence in accountability measure performance" for 2010. The Joint Commission selected 405 hospitals as top performers, or the top 14 percent of all accredited hospitals in the country.
