First photo: Lacey Young, left, and Grace Drake-Wilkes check the results as Lacey’s car wins a heat at the first-ever Girl Scout Powder Puff Pinewood Derby, held Sunday at the Selah Civic Center. The event attracted dozens of entries from Girl Scouts across the Yakima Valley and as far away as Ellensburg, said Girl Scout leader Amiee Colby, who hopes the competition becomes an annual event. The local Cub Scouts provided technical help.
Second photo: Pit crew member Rick Hall readies a racer. Decorations were encouraged, but pinewood cars can’t weigh in at more than 5 ounces. The sloping track was 42 feet long, and lasers kept time.
