CLE ELUM, Wash. — A 25-year-old Cle Elum man died late Saturday when his snowmobile struck an elk and crashed near here, the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office said this morning.
Undersheriff Clayton Myers identified the man as Joseph Heitman. A passenger on the 2003 Polaris, Karla Vicente, 19, of Ellensburg was taken to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.
The release said Heitman was traveling at a high rate of speed on McElroy Road, five miles west of here, when the mishap occurred.
A passerby found the wrecked vehicle and the injured couple and began efforts to revive Heitman. Firefighters arrived and continued those unsuccessful efforts.
The release did not indicate what happened to the animal.
