Slice of Yakima — Landscape painting bound for US embassy

Next time you're in Yemen, check out those Horse Heaven Hills.

An oil painting of the amber waves of grain at sunset in southern Benton County has been chosen to hang in the U.S. Embassy in Sana'a, Yemen, as part of a U.S. State Department cultural exchange.

The 20-by-36-inch painting is the work of Lisa McShane of Bellingham, Wash.

McShane, 51, grew up on a wheat farm near Connell and visits family in Yakima and the Tri-Cities often. In August, the professional painter and her husband enjoyed a picnic at the crest of the Horse Heaven Hills between Prosser and Benton City.

McShane finished the painting in October, submitting it to the embassy program online. She figured it was a long shot, but curator Imtiaz Hafiz said he chose the piece for how well it fit the American West theme he and Ambassador Gerald Feierstein sought.

It will be hung in December and stay up for about three years, Hafiz said.

The program receives about 10 to 20 submissions per month. McShane and the other artists chosen for the program get no compensation other than a feeling of patriotism.

"I'm really thrilled to have my painting represent my country," she said.
