Zillah to increase irrigation fee

ZILLAH, Wash. — Come January, irrigation bills will increase $2 an acre.

On Monday night, the City Council unanimously approved the pass-through increase from $89 an acre to $91 an acre. Irrigation in town is part of the Sunnyside Valley Irrigation District, which increased the fee.

But that may not be the only increase in fees in 2011 as preliminary budget figures show a $100,000 projected shortfall in this Lower Valley city’s $1.7 million general fund. Zillah has about 2,770 residents.

There is also a projected $60,000 deficit in water and sewer departments, said City Clerk-Treasurer Sharon Bounds.

"It’s not terrible, but for us, it’s different than it has been in the past," she said.

Possible remedies include cuts in staff and services and increases in water, sewer and garbage fees, she said.

Residents currently pay a 30 percent tax on water, sewer and garbage.

Public hearings on the budget are set for 6 p.m. Nov. 1 and Nov. 15 in council chambers at 111 Seventh St.
