YAKIMA, Wash. -- More than 40 firefighters from across the upper Yakima Valley were called out late Saturday night to fight a building fire in the downtown core.

The building at 13 S. First St. was empty and had been in the process of being remodeled when the fire was reported at 11:48 p.m. Damage is estimated at $100,000.

The building is adjacent the Lotus Room, a longtime downtown fixture at 9 S. First St. The Lotus Room did not sustain smoke damage from the fire.

Firefighters gained control of the blaze within an hour, but remained on scene until 3 a.m. They saved the building, valued at $300,000, Yakima Fire Department Battalion Chief Mitch Cole said.

The fire started in the attic, and no injuries were reported. Cole said investigators will began evaluating the cause of the blaze Monday, after the building is deemed safe for entry.
