Water main bursts at Benton Co. Courthouse

PROSSER -- A water main at the Benton County Courthouse burst Wednesday morning, sending water cascading down the elevator shaft and about 90 employees home for the day.

Maintenance workers turned the water off before it ruined any computers or caused serious structural damage, said Commissioner Max Benitz Jr. They repaired the 3-inch copper pipe, replaced damaged ceiling tiles and are in the process of drying out the first floor carpet.

Everybody will return to work and the courthouse will reopen today, Benitz said.

The ruptured line was discovered about 10 a.m. when water began squirting from the ceiling of the first-floor hallway between the elevators and the auditor's office.

"It was shooting water every place," Benitz said.

The line provides water for drinking, restrooms, the air-conditioning system and fire suppression sprinklers.

Benton County Commissioners decided in an emergency meeting that it was a safety and health hazard bad enough to close the courthouse and send workers home for the day, Benitz said.ma Herald-Republic
