Valley students earn Bel Canto scholarships

Andrew Isom of Selah and Jackie Kilian of Sunnyside have each been awarded a $500 music scholarship from Bel Canto of Yakima, a women's choral group.

The scholarships fund the cost of a music camp of the recipient's choice or private music lessons.

Isom is a senior at Selah High School, while Kilian is a home-schooled junior. Both students play the piano and both will be featured at Bel Canto's Christmas and spring concerts.

The alternate winner is Kaitlyn Young of Naches, a junior at Naches Valley High School who plays the flute.

Eleven students auditioned for the awards in April at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Bel Canto raised money for the music scholarships by hosting a matinee and evening performance at the Clarion Hotel in the spring.
