Crews grind away the top 5 inches of paving from the west end of the main runway at the Yakima Air Terminal on Monday to prepare for the repaving of that 2,600-foot section of runway that starts today. The repaving is the second of three phases to repave the entire 7,600-foot length of the runway. The third phase, which includes repaving another 2,600-foot section, will start Sept. 7 and will require closing the airport to Horizon Air flights Sept. 7-10, according to Mike Heironimus, airfield maintenance specialist for the airport. The airport will remain open for general aviation, air freight and air ambulance service. The project is funded by a $2.5 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration. As part of an agreement with the FAA, the airport will kick in about $125,000, or 5 percent of the grant amount, through funds generated from facility fees paid by airline passengers. The runway was last repaved in 1995. The current repaving project is being handled by Columbia Asphalt.
