YAKIMA -- Three Yakima Fire Department engines responded to burning paper in an old wood stove that caused smoke damage throughout a home Tuesday.

A Yakima police officer assisted an elderly woman, who was burning the paper, out the back door of the home located on the 300 block of North Fifth Ave. at about 9:30 a.m., according to a news release from the fire department.

The fire was confined and no one was hurt or hospitalized.

A postal carrier, Sharmie Cobb, was delivering mail when she heard the fire alarm and saw smoke coming from the house. She flagged down a passing officer.

Damage was minimal.
