Kindergartners get a primer on what school is like

YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Kindergartners at four schools in the Yakima School District are already getting a feel for their new classrooms — and the rules and routines that come with them.

The Kindergarten Transition Program in the Yakima School District started Monday at Adams, Barge-Lincoln, Garfield and Martin Luther King, Jr. elementary schools.

Kindergartners at those four schools will spend two weeks getting to know their teachers and learning the basics, like where to hang their backpacks and coats, and  the location of the lunchroom and restrooms, before the big kids arrive on Aug. 30.

The program is funded through Ready by Five, an early learning initiative funded by funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Thrive By Five Washington.

Ready by Five works within East Yakima to help children up to 5 years old — and their families — get kindergarten-ready.

Kindergartners at the district’s remaining nine elementary schools get to take part in a similar, one-week program beginning Aug. 16.
