YAKIMA, Wash. — Firefighters suspect an improperly-discarded cigarette caused a fire early Thursday morning that heavily damaged a vacant building at the Track 29 mall downtown.

Firefighters responded to the blaze in the former Coyote Creek building about 6:35 a.m. and extinguished it before 8 a.m.

The two-story building’s exterior wall and it’s wooden deck out front were heavily damaged to the tune of about $90,000, a Yakima Fire Department news release said.

No injuries were reported.

The fire did not affect any neighboring businesses, the release said.

About 16 firefighters responded.

Earlier today, fire officials reported that the blaze occurred in a vacant train car shop but later clarified that it was in a separate two-story building at the Track 29 mall.

Investigators determined that the fire started in a planter on the deck Wednesday and smoldered all night before igniting, the release said.

They suspect a cigarette thrown into the planter caused it, said Ron Melcher, deputy fire marshal for the Yakima Fire Department.
