Selah teen among six injured in Soap Lake crash

SOAP LAKE, Wash. — A Selah teenager was taken to the hospital with possible broken legs after two pickups collided Sunday afternoon in Grant County, injuring six people.

According to the Washington State Patrol, 15-year-old Clifford A. Thomas was a passenger in a 2006 GMC pickup that was traveling south on State Route 17 when it failed to stop at the intersection with State Route 28.

The GMC was struck by a 2003 Chevrolet pickup that was traveling east on SR 28, according to the state patrol.

The crash occurred around noon, about mile from the Soap Lake city limits.

The driver of the GMC, 44-year-old Darin E. Clifford of Tucson, Ariz., was taken to Columbia Basin Hospital in Ehprata with multiple cuts and bruises.

His passenger, the Selah teen, suffered facial, head and internal injuries — including possible broken legs — and was transported to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, according to the state patrol.

The driver of the Chevy, 33-year-old John J. Heston of Ephrata, was taken to Columbia Basin with neck, back and chest pain.

The three children in his truck, ages 5,7 and 8, were all taken to Columbia Basin with neck and chest injuries.

Drugs or alcohol weren’t involved in the crash, according to the state patrol. Both drivers and all passengers were wearing seat lbelts, and both pickups were totaled, according to the state patrol.
